On the return journey, you will thrill to the magnificent sights and sounds of a Steam Locomotive hard at work climbing Western Australia's steepest and most spectacular section of railway, through the Darling Range Escarpment as the train returns you to Dwellingup.

About the Hotham Valley Railway’s history:

For fifty years Dwellingup was a busy centre for the thriving timber industry in the area. However, a disastrous fire in January 1961 saw the demise of most of the surrounding timber mills leaving only the Dwellingup operation.

The railway line to Dwellingup, which had opened in 1910 as part of a connection between Pinjarra and Narrogin, then saw ever decreasing use until the once weekly freight service was withdrawn completely in 1984. During the early 1970’s some enthusiastic Pinjarra residents saw the potential in the railway as a special experience for people in WA. And so the “Pinjarra Steam and Hills Railway Preservation Society” was formed in 1974 which later became the “Hotham Valley Tourist Railway”.
